Ursula Annunziata helps to move desalination forward
Ursula Annunziata, director of Genesys International and president of the European Desalination Society (EDS) (back row, 5th from the right), was invited to participate in the Masdar Renewable Energy Desalination advisory panel at a meeting on 18 January. The meeting was held at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
In January 2013, following a mandate from Abu Dhabi’s leadership, the institute launched a programme to develop and demonstrate advanced and innovative technologies in desalination. Its key objectives were ensuring water security and reducing energy consumption.
The advisory panel co-ordinated by Dr Alexander Ritschel (3rd from left back row) and Dr Corrado Sommariva (front row, 3rd from the right) has selected four technology proposals from nearly 200 submissions. These incorporate improved energy efficiency, diversified energy sources and some completely novel and potentially revolutionary concepts. During the first phase, each of the four pilots will be constructed. In a second phase, after 2016, the successful pilot plants will be translated into large-scale versions.
