IN THE BEGINNING...........
Many people ask us about the origin of the Genesys company name. Genesis comes from the Greek word meaning birth, creation, cause, beginning, source or origin and is the first book of the Old Testament. We thought this summed up our new company venture in 2001 quite well. We had all worked for the UK water treatment firm Houseman, and latterly Nalco, and were embarking on a new enterprise. The pyramids represent the old with the sun rising on the beginning of a new day.

Genesys has had an excellent 2007, growing our sales volume by 40 per cent and we would like to thank all our customers and supporters for your help and encouragement and wish you a very happy holiday. Please note our new correspondence address:  Unit 4 Ion Path, Road One, Winsford Industrial Estate, Winsford, Cheshire, CW7 3RG

DISTRIBUTORS 'BOND' AT HOTEL SUMMIT
The year has been dominated by conferences with Genesys showcasing its important research through a series of technical papers. In September we held our third distributor conference at the Deanwater Hotel, at Wilmslow, near Manchester, which was attended by 35 delegates from 20 countries.

A number of technical presentations were given including topics on waste water RO plant treatment, operating high silica RO plant, prevention of calcium sulphate scale, how to clean clay from membranes and how to set up and monitor effective flocculant dosage for pre-treatment. Hints and tips on how to get the most from the Membrane Master antiscaling software were particularly beneficial and the resulting questionnaire was won by Dr. Dhrubbo Bannerjee of India. A CD of all the technical presentations was produced for the delegates along with a sales-aid folder. The four-day conference at the former 16th century mill was not all work. Following a tour of the new Genesys factory and a membrane autopsy demonstration, the delegation retired to the local Egerton Arms for traditional English ale and food. This included steak and ale pie, fish and chips and that most English of dishes - a steaming hot curry.

The gala dinner was held at the Deanwater Hotel with a fantastic meal followed by traditional passing of a record eight bottles of port around the table. Speeches and prize-giving followed. Winner of biggest growth distributor was Jens Nahring from Germany and best new distributor went to Turkey with Didem Avcu (pictured) receiving the prize from sales director Ursula Annunziata and general manager Steve Chesters. The evening entertainment continued with a James Bond-themed Casino Royale night complete with roulette, blackjack and Texas holdum poker. Ted Darton was seen pestering wife Rosemary for additional funds after losing his shirt in the first five minutes at the poker table. The Genesys team looked resplendent in tuxedos and ball gowns although a bit the worse for wear when the picture, below, was taken.

The following morning each country presented on their territory and performance and a lively debate ensued. Many thanks to all who contributed and helped organise our most successful conference to date.

CONFERENCE SHOWCASE FOR GENESYS RESEARCH
Two weeks after the distributor conference the team flew out to Gran Canaria for the IDA Conference. Genesys were co-sponsors of the Sunday afternoon golf tournament and were ably represented by Richard Martin from Genesys Spain. Congratulations to Alberto Gomez winner of the handicap tournament and David Thomas for best scratch score. Genesys had a heavily-visited stand where we met up with old friends and made many new ones including the founder members of the Caribbean Desalination Association Manuel Pereira and Linda Dudley pictured (centre). Special note to Erroll Grimes and Richard Gordon for their perpetual good humour.

The 19th IDA World Congress on Desalination and Water Reuse ran from the 21 to 26 October and was attended by 1,300 delegates and visitors who listened to more than 200 technical papers and were thoroughly entertained at a masquerade party and a traditional Canarian festival with stilt dancing and a firework display. There was a trip to a Wild West town complete with a shootout between cowboys and Indians and a superb barbecue supper.
The focus of Genesys attention was on two papers delivered by Steve Chesters and Silvia Gallego.

In the paper, he explored the growth in Waste Water RO plant and explained the chemistry of calcium phosphate scale formation when highly-loaded phosphate feed water is used as a feed supply to RO plant. In the process of developing a new antiscalant product Genesys PHO the experience of dentists who are trying to make a calcium phosphate cement for teeth repair was discovered and used. Finally Steve showed the results from three field trials and two operational plant to demonstrate the effectiveness of the new Genesys PHO antiscalant. Renowned Professor David Hasson, from Technion University, was co-chairing the session on membrane fouling with Dr Linda Dudley and Professor Kerabelas. Professor Hasson said the calcium phosphate paper was the best he had seen at the conference.

Silvia Gallego presented a paper on Simple Laboratory Techniques to Improve the Operation of RO pre-treatment systems (download here).

In the paper Silvia demonstrated how the use of membrane autopsy techniques on elements of the pre-treatment system like filter media can be a valuable tool to improve the efficiency of the pre-treatment plant. The limitations of using just the Silt Density Index (SDI) as a measure of pre-treatment performance was discussed. The additional value of the use of the particle counter to establish the number and size of particles in the feed water was explained along with how the equipment works. A number of case studies were used to demonstrate the effectiveness of these new techniques to improve removal of suspended matter from the RO feed water. Genesys have a number of new papers being worked on for next year and if any readers are interested in discussing potential collaboration they should contact schesters@genesysro.com The IDA conference was capped off with a gala dinner which included an orchestra and fantastic fireworks display. A big thank you must go to Pat Burke Secretary General of the International Desalination Association for all her hard work in organising such a large conference.

As Technical Chairs of the conference Genesys Sales Director Ursula Annunziata and Lisa Henthorne (now president of the IDA) were responsible for setting up this aspect of the conference. With more than 200 technical papers being presented Ursula and Lisa's organisational skills were required to ensure smooth operation throughout the conference. In recognition of their achievement the IDA board presented both with a Presidential Award for "Outstanding performance as co-chair of the scientific programme".

KOREA SEAHERO
The final major event of the year was a visit to Korea by Steve Chesters. He was a guest speaker at the International Desalination Workshop at Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) organized by Professor In S. Kim, director of the Center for Seawater Desalination, Professor Jaewon Cho of GIST and Professor Miriam Balaban Secretary General of the European Desalination Society. The keynote speaker was Professor Jan Schippers who addressed the 150 delegates on "MFI more than an alternative for SDI".

Prof.Yoram Oren                               Youn-Ah Min                 Prof. Miriam Balaban
Dr. Byung Soo Oh                                 Steve Chesters                   Prof. Jan Schippers

Steve's paper title was Innovations in the Inhibition of RO membrane scaling and fouling.(download here). Topics covered in the paper were operation of waste water RO plant, magnesium hydroxide scale inhibition in two stage high pH boron removal plant, membrane master scaling prediction software, sulphate reducing membrane treatment, a new product for cleaning clay from membranes and autopsy and particle counting techniques for membrane and pre-treatment plant.

The Koreans have set up an impressive five-year research programme called Seawater Engineering & Architecture of High Efficiency Reverse Osmosis (SEAHERO). This includes funding from government and industry and incorporates more than 400 researchers. The whole event ran very smoothly and our thanks go to Professors Kim and Balaban for the kind invitation to attend and to Youn Ah Min for her superb organisation and hospitality.

NEW BROCHURE
However, we have not spent all our time at exhibitions and conferences. September saw the launch of the new-look Genesys brochure. The result of much hard work by General Manager Steve Chesters, the brochure has been very well received at the distributor and IDA conferences. The aim was to provide an easy reference to our customers on all Genesys services, products and updated geographical contact details. The brochure also contains many useful tips associated with membrane cleaning and approvals. Demand has been so high that a second production run has already been completed.

The Genesys website has also been improved with the addition of a dedicated Genesys distributor section. This contains vital information including health and safety data, technical presentations and product approvals. Genesys distributors can now access information quickly in response to the demands of their customers.

GENESYS MANUFACTURING
We are pleased to report the success of the new manufacturing facility in the UK under the management of John Eckersley. His experience has ensured that more than 70% of orders are despatched within five working days of receipt. John is also pleased to report that the initial assessment for ISO 9001 is scheduled for December 2007 and they expect to receive full certification within four to eight weeks of this.He has been instrumental in the implementation and launch of new software which allows us to translate product literature into any language. There are many challenges ahead with the introduction of new equipment at a time whn global markets are very unstable and oil and raw material costs are at an all time high.

NEW FACES
A year of growth for Genesys has meant we have had to adapt and build our team to ensure that we can respond to the needs of our customers.
Dawn Woodward joined in June of this year. A degree-level, qualified accountant with more than 20 years' experience, her role is to analyse and improve the Genesys accounting and management information systems. Presenting at the distributor conference, Dawn focussed on addressing multi-currency problems and implementing a strategy to help our distributors understand some of the issues we face when dealing with so many different countries. With the end of the financial year approaching we are sure Dawn will remain extremely busy.

Genesys made a vital addition to the team when they appointed Matt Armstrong as International Sales Manager in August. Matt joined with more than 10 years' experience in water treatment from Nalco and Veolia. He will now be responsible for sales growth in the UK, Eastern Europe, Nordic Region, Holland and Belgium.

He was fortunate to meet many of our distributors at the recent conference and plans to visit many of them in the coming months to ensure we are doing all we can to support them.

Matt went through a month long training programme which included a visit to the membrane autopsy laboratory in Spain and attending the excellent UNESCO-IHE Membrane desalination course ran by Jan Schippers and Maria Kennedy

We look forward to the challenges of the forthcoming year and the staff at Genesys International would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and supporters for their hard work and support.

We are sure to face new and exciting challenges in 2008 and we pledge that our focus will remain on offering the best possible support to our distributor companies and customers.

Website makeover drives up traffic
Steve Chesters and Silvia Gallego were behind a major makeover of the Genesys
website that has trebled the volume of traffic and delivers daily sales leads from around the world. The bright, new site now helps clients choose the technology and products they need to solve problems. There is also a section on laboratory services from the Genesys laboratory and research centre in Madrid.

Steve said: "The new site has company and staff information, lab pictures and explanations of the problems associated with reverse osmosis membranes, and the best products to choose to optimise performance. "There are details of software you can use on-line and request copies of, as well as a selection chart and data on products. "The volume of traffic through the website doubled initially after it went live on July 12 last year and has now trebled over the original level." Most of the traffic to the web-site is from the Middle East and USA.

New look brochure
The Genesys brochure is being redesigned and will be launched in the next couple of months. We are trying to collate useful hints and tips. If you have any nuggets of gold, advice, useful equations please send them to Steve Chesters at schesters@genesyro.com

Mastering the Chinese market
Genesys International is tapping into the rapidly expanding Chinese market with Membrane Master III, the leading computer software for the water treatment industry. Membrane Master is used by consultants, manufacturers and operators to optimise water plant design and operation. Having been translated into Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Turkish, Membrane Master III it is now available in Chinese. Membrane Master uses data from all membrane manufacturers, plant operating information and water analysis to accurately predict the likely scalants in a membrane system. It then calculates the best product to use and dosage rate.

Updating the software and translating it into Chinese was completed by international sales manager David Golding and KS Boo, director of Genesys Pacific in Singapore pictured above. Genesys has several distributors in China, a major growth area for RO plant and ancillary services in the next five years.

Taking the stand at key conferences
Life will definitely not be a beach for Genesys executives Silvia Gallego and Steve Chesters at two important exhibitions in Greek and Spanish resorts. They are planning to present key papers during the International Desalination Association's world summit in Gran Canaria in October. The papers are Simple Laboratory Techniques to Improve the Operation of RO Pre-treatment Systems by Silvia Gallego and Ted Darton, and Theory and Practical Experience of Calcium Phosphate Inhibition of RO Waters by Steve Chesters, Fernando del Vigo and Ted Darton. Genesys scales new heights
THE managing director of Genesys Middle East and Aquatreat has been scaling new heights for the water industry quite literally. Tarek Abu-Dehays unfurled a flag bearing the companies' logos at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, which at 5,895 metres is the highest point in Africa.
Tarek, who is based in Jordan, reached the peak last November after a six-day climb. He said: "It was physically demanding and the final push to the summit took seven hours, which meant another seven hours back down to base camp."
